Remote Job Red Flags: How to Spot a Scam in 30 Seconds

Remote job scams have exploded because remote trust is hard to verify. Here's the 30-second checklist we use to vet every listing.

The 10 Red Flags

  1. **You're asked to pay anything** — tools, training, "registration", equipment. Legit employers never charge candidates. Ever.
  2. **Salary is suspiciously high** for the role and experience level
  3. **The interview is only text chat** — no video, no real human contact
  4. **They "hire" you immediately** without any meaningful interview
  5. **The email domain doesn't match the company** (gmail.com "from" a Fortune 500, etc.)
  6. **Pressure tactics** — "this offer expires in 24 hours"
  7. **Requests for bank details or ID documents** before you've even interviewed
  8. **The posting is vague** — no company name, no location, no description
  9. **Check-writing or "package forwarding" schemes** — you "receive" money to buy equipment
  10. **The job board has zero verification** — postings with no apply URL outside the platform

How to Verify Any Listing in 60 Seconds

  1. Search the company name + "scam" or "fake job posting"
  2. Visit the company's official careers page — does the role exist there?
  3. Check the apply URL goes to the company domain, not a random site
  4. Look up the recruiter on LinkedIn — real recruiters have history
  5. Trust boards that link directly to the original posting

What job2remote Does

We aggregate from established remote job sources and career pages — every listing carries its original apply link so you can verify before applying. If something looks off, apply through the original source.

The Bottom Line

If it feels off, it is. Legit remote jobs never ask for money, never hire on chat alone, and always stand up to a 60-second verification. When in doubt, walk away.
